Canal Zone (Unique Archival Copy).
New York: Gagosian Gallery, 2008. Oblong folio. One of two recorded bookworks created by Richard Prince as supplements to his 2008 Canal Zone cycle of paintings. Being a reworked copy of the corresponding Gagosian catalogue—which was at one point legally ordered to be destroyed during the infamous Cariou lawsuit (2009)—with Prince here fashioning 11 collages that juxtapose reproductions of the final paintings with cut-up elements of their photographic source materials, many of them over-painted or embellished with unique drawings and accompanied by the loaded annotation: "Original(?)." With an additional 7 interventions made by Prince throughout the catalogue (for a total of 18), including a pasted reproduction of the cover image from Women (2004). SIGNED by Prince to front endpaper, and dated 2008. A fine copy, in thick illustrated boards; housed in custom cloth clamshell with leather lettering piece to spine. A unique, self-reflexive bookwork, addressing one of the central themes of Prince's oeuvre (i.e. originality); uncannily foreshadowing the copyright lawsuit from the following year.
