Novel based on Lodge's military service from the 1950s; this copy INSCRIBED by Lodge to front endpaper: "To Mark Herzog Spilka / with best wishes + warm / memories of Providential days / David Lodge / June 1965." Lodge and Spilka appear to have known each other during Lodge's stay in Providence, during his Commonwealth Fellowship, when Spilka was teaching at Brown University. Brown cloth boards, near fine. In price-clipped, illustrated jacket with minor scuffing and some creasing to crown of spine, else near fine.
