Jaipur: The Information Bureau, Government of Jaipur, 1948. First Edition. Octavo. An advance copy of Cartier-Bresson's rare first regularly published book (preceded only by a MoMA catalogue), with two publisher's review sheets laid in. Text by Max Olivier. 62 images shot in and around Jaipur in August 1948 when Cartier-Bresson visited India for the marriage of Princess Premkumari Sahiba. While lacking the majesty and print quality of his later publications, Cartier-Bresson's penchant for capturing the "decisive moment" is nonetheless on display in this unassuming travelogue. With uniform gray tonality, the photographs evince a nostalgic timeless quality that carries the viewer back to an age when photography revealed cultures and places little-known outside of their borders. Fine in a near fine jacket, nicked at the spine head, with a tiny splash and small adhesive shadow visible on the front panel. Notoriously uncommon in jacket, this is the nicest copy we have seen or handled. Particularly rare with the Indian review material laid in.
