Baden: Burda Druck und Verlag GMBH, 1961. First Edition. Quarto. The scarce issue in cloth. One of the greatest Jazz photobooks ever published. The result of a jazz-themed road trip taken by photographer William Claxton and author Joachim Berendt in 1960, Jazzlife features hundreds of black and white (and some color) photographs taken in America's great jazz cities. Arguably the best document of the mid-century American jazz scene, the book includes images of giants like John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus, Monk and many more. (Auer 411). Near fine with small tear to title page and a touch of rubbing to cloth covers; binding tight and corners sharp. A very nice copy, but without jacket. Some copies of this title were issued with original records laid into a sleeve at the rear pastedown; this copy with sleeve but without records.
