Los Angeles: Choke Publications, 1977. First Edition. Oblong 12mo. Artist's book by performance and conceptual artist Chris Burden documenting his design and production of the B-Car, a motorized bicycle car that could travel 100 miles per hour and get 100 miles per gallon. With bw photographs of the car's production and eventual road test in Europe. Burden seems to have drawn his design inspiration for this extraordinary little booklet as much from car magazines and auto dealer advertising pamphlets as from more traditional art publications or photographic books. In this, Burden fits squarely within the tradition of Southern California-based conceptual or minimalist artists of his era; Ruscha, Baldessari, and Robert Irwin have all acknowledged, either explicitly in their work, or in other venues, the degree to which their aesthetics have been shaped by California's car culture. Burden's emphasis on both performance and efficiency now seems particularly prescient. Near fine in illustrated stapled wrappers as issued. Sharp copy.
