Newark: Artbuilders, Inc., 1986. First Edition. Quarto, stitched bound. An artists' book book designed by Barbara M. Meise and Laura L. Cuevas from contributions by 150 students of the Warren School and the Harriet Tubman School of Newark, New Jersey. The book was printed by the Phoenix Printing Corp. of Ridgefield, New Jersey, with the covers and some pages hand colored by the students. The book reflects the pedagogical philosophies of the Generative Art movement that emanated from School of The Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, Chicago, and the Visual Studies Workshop of Rochester, New York. Each page is a photocopied artwork by a student; many are elaborate, sophisticated and carefully produced. A laid-in folded pamphlet contextualizes Meise and Cuevas's strategy of creating collaborative artists' books with students. An additional laid in pamphlet contains a price list from a joint exhibition. Altogether, an impressive and compelling example of a pedagogical parallel to zine culture. Near fine in hand-painted wrappers with bound in acetate covers. Scarce, OCLC locates two copies, one at the Thomas J. Watson Library.
