New York: Tony Shafrazi Gallery, 1979-2002. Collection of 112 Tony Shafrazi exhibition announcements, posters, and other ephemera, some circulated. The collection tracks Shafrazi's New York City gallerist career; notable artists shown included Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Donald Baechler, Kenny Scharf, Ronnie Cutrone, Michael Heizer, Ed Ruscha, Enzo Cucchi, Patrick Demarchelier, David LaChapelle, and many others. The collection begins with his inaugural New York City show with Oliver Mosset in 1979, shown in Shafrazi’s apartment at 88 Lexington Avenue, and goes on to contain such important shows as Shafrazi's first exhibition of work by Keith Haring in a 1981 group show, his first exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat in a 1983 group show, as well as Basquiat’s final solo show as a living artist, held in 1987. In addition to the gallery invitations, the collection contains five posters, and four 1981 artist biographies for Keith Haring, Donald Baechler, Jonathan Lasker, and Ronnie Cutrone. Throughout, the invitations themselves are graphically compelling; one can see in their evolution into increasingly deluxe printed objects, the growth of the contemporary art market. An important ephemeral collection tracing the galleries trajectory of one of art’s most colorful characters. A few items showing light creases, but majority near fine to fine, some items circulated.
