New York, c. 1965. Collection of 90 paper and plastic bags from at least 35 different bookshops in New York City. Bags range from 10 x 6 1/4 inches to 15 1/2 x 12 inches, differ in design and color scheme; about half the collection contains duplicates. Many feature iconic logos from the stores which distributed them; others are unattributed. If time was taken to map the location of each bookshop mentioned, one would come up with a veritable tourist's guide to the destinations of a bygone New York literary culture. Collection includes bags from Sheridan Square Paperback Corner Greenwich Village, Grand Central Paperback Bookshop, Rexall, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Bookstore, Wiliam A. Lowell, Incorporated, Marboro Book Shops, Bookmasters Bookshop, Brentano's Booksellers, Salter's Book Centers, R. Gordon and Company, Gail G. Grant Company, Barnes and Noble Incorporated, All Booked Up, Doubleday Books, Rexall Books, Studio Paperbacks Bookshop, Paperback Forum, Atlantic Men's Shop,Brentano's Literary Emporium, 8th Street Book Shop, Cokesbury, E. J. Korvettes, Florman and Babb, Laurel Book Center, Scribner's, Weber and Heilbroner, The 55th Street Bookcase, Incorporated, Three Sixes Bookshop, and Tie City. Soiling and fading present throughout the collection, as are contemporary pieces of plastic tape affixed to the bags. Good condition overall.
