Marcus Brutus: The Truth That Never Hurts
Harper's is thrilled to announce an expansion of our East Hampton location, with a new gallery adjacent to our existing storefront at 87 Newtown Lane. The first exhibition in the new gallery is a solo presentation by Marcus Brutus, his third with Harper's, entitled The Truth That Never Hurts. In these thirteen new paintings on canvas made during quarantine, Brutus has shifted his focus to formal interactions of color, and an examination of abstract motifs within his traditional figurative work. By immersing his scenes with highly saturated backdrops, his depictions of everyday moments in Black life take on a kaleidoscopic quality bordering on the fantastical. At once light-hearted and thought-provoking, this new body of work sets a salutary tone for what has been a rocky year.
