Harper's Books is thrilled to announce the opening of a new exhibition of deer photographs by up-and-coming photographer and filmmaker Peter Suherland. We will present images from Buck Shots, published by powerHouse Books in 2007. This series is Sutherland's paean to deer, shot from 2002-2007 in seven states and New Zealand. The ethereal beauty of the images, and of the animals themselves, stands in stark contrast to the other great American photographic work on deer, Les Krims' Deerslayers, published in 1972.
Aside from the present work, Sutherland has published seven books and directed three films, including the critically acclaimed Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project, directed and produced with Jack Youngleson, and aired on the Sundance Channel. Sutherland is also prominent in a loosely affiliated group of downtown photographers reshaping the New York photo and art world. Known as the "Tinyvices" for their participation in Vice Magazine, the group consists of some of the biggest young names in the downtown photo world, including Dash Snow, Ryan McGinley, Tim Barber and Leigh Ledare.
