Hiroshima Now.

Tokyo: Shinya Soshosha, 1970. First Edition. Square quarto. Essay in English by Tadanori Yokoo. "Comment" by Hideo Nakai. Black and white images of latesixties Hiroshima, mostly dispassionate street scenes and snippets of daily life, with a few medical zingers interspersed throughout. Sometimes photobooks with ostensibly banal shots can appear painfully artistic (the Dusseldorf photographers come to mind), but in this book the spare image of a rainy Hiroshima street, or a solitary man at a ramen counter, has a perverse, almost hypnotic power. Boards and top page edges lightly foxed, else close to near fine in a in a near fine jacket with the instantly recognizable photograph a plane's landing gear with a gray Hiroshima spread out in the distance.
