11:02 Nagasaki.

Tokyo: Shashindojin-sha, 1966. First Edition. Small quarto. Insert laid in. One of the cornerstone books of postwar Japanese photography. In this brilliantly edited volume, Tomatsu moves away from a purely representational depiction of the horrors of Japan's defining moment, focussing equally on the abstract tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki rather than just human deformity. In many ways, the cover image of a watch stopped cold at 11:02 is more chilling than the profile of a scarred bride on her wedding day. (Parr / Badger, v1, 276-277; Open Book 226-227; Auer 454). Spine discolored, else near fine in photo-illustrated boards and original cardboard slipcase, toned at the edges and extremities. (Lacking the original acetate overlay.)
