ALVAREZ BRAVO, Manuel
Photographies Photographs Fotografias:1928-1968
Mexico City: Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes / Mexico68: Programa Cultural de la XIX Olimpiada (1968). First Edition. Square quarto. SIGNED by Alvarez Bravo, with a correction in his hand on page 85, the famous image of the murdered worker, replacing Chiapas with Oaxaca. A retrospective of 40 years of Alvarez Bravo's photographs, issued to coincide with the Mexico City Olympiad in 1968, and an exhibition of Alvarez Bravo's photographs at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, June 25 - August 5, 1968. Trilingual introduction and captioning (French, English, Spanish). Despite the seemingly patriotic theme, Alvarez Bravo's chilling indictment of the government's actions prior to the Olympics is evident here. The image of the murdered worker, shot in 1934, is an obvious reference to the state killings of "criminals" that preceded the games. Dent to the top edge of the rear board, white boards lightly soiled; a near fine copy in photo-illustrated laminated boards as issued. Nice copy of a notoriously fragile book. OCLC locates only two copies.
