Harper’s Books announces its inaugural exhibition of photography
MATT WEBER
OBAMA
June 6 – August 7, 2009
OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST
SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Harper's Books is pleased to announce its second exhibition with New York
photographer Matt Weber. For over twenty years Weber has prowled the streets of
the city in search of the next great shot. He has become a cult figure among New York
City photographers and collectors, having produced an unrivaled contemporary
document of an ever changing New York, while cultivating an instantly recognizable
aesthetic that places him amongst the most important image makers of our time.
While our first show was a retrospective of Weber's now iconic New York images, this
exhibition will focus on a single subject: the reaction of New Yorkers to the election of
Barack Obama as President of the United States. Weber's shots of Election Night
jubilation in Times Square capture the catharsis of a city, while his photographs taken on
Election Day and during the inauguration provide a telling narrative amidst the
outpouring of raw emotion.
To celebrate the exhibition, Harper's Books will co-publish a book of Weber's Obama
images, available as a limited edition of only 150 copies. Our collaborator on this
project, Sanctuary Books of New York City, was the publisher of Weber's 2004
monograph, The Urban Prisoner, and is currently producing a documentary film on
Weber's life and work.
