MARTIN PARR

ASSORTED COCKTAILS

June 23 – August 10, 2007

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST

SATURDAY, JUNE 23, FROM 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Harper’s Books is pleased to host the first exhibition in the Hamptons of British photographer Martin Parr. This grouping of photographs, which Parr has aptly named Assorted Cocktails, draws from images taken over the last twenty years in a variety of locales. Parr is widely regarded as one the most important photographers of our era. From his early work in Thatcher’s England, to his latest project of photographing parking spaces in forty-one countries on five continents, Parr has contributed a lasting color commentary on the vagaries of modern life.

This commentary is enhanced by Parr’s enormous contribution to photographic literature. He is the author of over thirty books and artist books. His collection Common Sense, published by Dewi Lewis in 1999, was included in The Open Book, a compilation by the Hasselblad Center of the most important photobooks ever published. Several images from Common Sense will be on display in our exhibition. Furthermore, Parr is co-author of the The Photobook: A History. This two-volume reference has quickly become the most important book of its kind, revolutionizing the way photobooks are both appreciated and collected, while bringing little known works into the forefront of public discourse.

For further information, please contact Harper Levine or Kirsten Iverson at 631-324-1131, or mail@harpersbooks.com.

Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10:00-5:00, Sunday 11:00-4:00, or by appointment.

Harper’s Books is located at 66 Newtown Lane, second floor.
