HANS EIJKELBOOM

PHOTO NOTES

June 28 – August 16, 2008

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST

SATURDAY JUNE 28, 6:00–8:00 PM

With the publication of his 2007 Aperture book, Paris, New York, Shanghai, Dutch conceptual artist Hans Eijkelboom burst upon the world of contemporary photography with his striking street sequences of those three dynamic cities. In his introduction to the book, renowned photographer Martin Parr likened Eijkelboom to an anthropologist and compared his work to Ed Ruscha and Hans-Peter Feldmann.

The comparisons to Ruscha and Feldmann are apt, because Eijkelboom cut his teeth in the long and honored tradition of the photo-based artists’ book. Since the early 1970s, Eijkelboom has produced over thirty publications, many in small quantities with limited distribution. His most enduring project to date, Photo Notes, is the basis for our show. From 1992-2004, Eijkelboom compiled an exhaustive inventory of photographs shot in urban settings, usually on street corners. These diaristic images, always presented in a grid-like series, are actually remarkable comments on contemporary life. From bare-chested roller-bladers in Chelsea, to boring businessmen wearing trench coats and carrying briefcases, to arm-linked older couples in Amsterdam, Eijkelboom captures the vagaries and banalities of the modern urban existence while adhering to a rigorous conceptual typology.

For this exhibition, Harper’s Books will present a selection of approximately forty Photo Notes, each in an edition of three, chosen and curated by the artist. Although the subject matter will be a cross-section of work from various locales, the focus will be on Photo Notes shot in New York. In addition to the photographs, we will also present an assortment of Eijkelboom’s rare and and out-of-print books.
