Henri Cartier-Bresson
Tokyo 1966
Harper's Books is pleased to present Henri Cartier-Bresson: Tokyo 1966, an exhibition of rare vintage prints of Cartier-Bresson's photographs from the 1950s and '60s. Originally included in the photographer’s first major Japanese exhibition at the Shinjuku Keiô Department Store in Tokyo, October 1966, curated by Robert Delpire, these images present an eclectic selection of seminal photographs and lesser-known works. The prints correspond exactly to a catalogue issued in conjunction with the exhibition, as indicated by the Japanese markings on the versos of the photographs. Since Cartier-Bresson's vintage work rarely appears in commerce, this exhibition provides an unusual opportunity to acquire historically significant pictures from one of the twentieth century's most venerated photographers. While Delpire's original curation cannot be replicated on the wall, the benefit of his selection process and intimacy with the material will nonetheless be evident in the display.
